Brazil national team – Uruguay national team 1950 World Cup

In 1950, the world championship, the fourth in a row, and the first, held after World War II, hosted Brazil. Millions of hot Brazilian fans remembered, of course, that in the I and II championships the winners were the hosts of the tournaments. They also remembered that at the last pre-war championship in 1938, in distant Europe, the Brazilian national team reached the semifinals, where they lost, as every Brazilian firmly knew, only because the coach did not install Leonidas. Now, in 1950, the whole country had no doubt that Brazil would be the champion in Brazil.

The championship of 1950 was played out according to a scheme unusual for modern football fans. There were no matches in the Olympic system with the immediate elimination of losers, the winners of the four group tournaments formed the final group, where the games were held again in a circular system – each played with each. The champion should have been the team that scored the most points.
Marakana5 The last, final match in the IV championship was the game Brazil – Uruguay, held July 16, 1950. Actually, once in the final group the games were held in a round-robin system, the match between these teams could have been held earlier, but the calendars seemed to have a premonition that it would be decisive, and made it final, in fact, final. So it turned out that just in it a new world champion had to decide.
The national teams of Brazil and Uruguay approached the decisive match with very different results. In the final group, the Uruguayan footballers hardly won against the Swedish team – 3: 2, and tied with the Spanish team – 2: 2. The Brazilians defeated the Swedes with a score of 7: 1, and the Spaniards with a score of 6: 1. The Brazilians had great strikers – Ademir, who scored 9 goals in this championship and became the top scorer of the tournament, as well as Zhair, Chico, Friak. And all the other Brazilian footballers were real virtuosos, “magicians” of the ball and, of course, the idols of millions of their fans.

Millions of pennants with the words “Brazil is the champion!” Have already been procured. Brazilian soccer players gave autographs to fans beforehand. On the match day, the newspapers came out with huge photos of the Brazilian national football players, and among the jubilant lines you could find, for example, the following: “The Brazilian team, having scored their sensational victories, is entering the field today with the already won glory of the strongest team in the world.” Newspaper pages were filled with huge headlines: “It remains to hold on the field two halves!”

To the great amazement of the fans, the defense of the Uruguayans held out, deciphering all the moves of the Brazilian attack. The pillars of defense of Varela and Andrade acted without error. The Uruguayan goalkeeper Maspoli, who conducted the best match of his life, also played superbly.
Minutes passed, but there was no “Brazilian” goal. Uruguay national team survived the entire first half, and the teams went on a break with the score 0: 0.
On the 2nd minute of the second half, Brazilian striker Friake managed to finally score a goal. “Marakan” was seized with a fever of madness. Enthusiastic screams, it seemed, could hear the whole huge country. Richer viewers sitting in the boxes, opened the champagne. The only ones at the stadium who remained calm in this cacophony were only Uruguay’s football players, but what about the judges?
Marakana2 But 19 minutes had passed, and an icy rain seemed to spill over the Marakana: the low, fragile Uruguayan striker Juan Alberto Skiaffino equalized. Dead silence reigned in the stands of the crowded stadium. True, even in the case of a draw, the Brazilian national team became the champion …
However, the missed ball knocked the Brazilian players out of the rut, in the game the team immediately something went wrong. The attacks became erratic and lost their urgency. The defense began to make ridiculous mistakes.
Marakana4 One of them took advantage of the Uruguayans’ attack Higgia 11 minutes before the end of the match: having made an ingenious raid on the right, he scored the second goal against the Brazilian goalkeeper Barbosa. The final whistle sounded in absolute silence: tens of thousands of spectators wept silently.
