Two “Cinderellas” of the English Premier League

The “Leicester” team is opening this season. Claudio Ranieri, a coach who doesn’t have enough stars from heaven, managed to create a very strong and attractive team. It is unlikely that someone could have assumed at the beginning of the season that a modest team by the standards of the Premier League, for 13 rounds before the end of the championship, will be on the list of top teams applying for the championship. I will not speak in advance about the possible championship of children from the Principality of Lancashire, as they do not do it themselves. They just go out and play good football. Football, which many people like and thanks to which the “foxes” are impressed not only in Britain, but also on the continent.

The main question that interests many football fans is whether a modest team will be able to pick up and win the English Championship. In our age, where everything is subordinated to big capital, football is not becoming a game, but a means of influence, enthusiasm and hobby of rich people. For clubs whose budgets are not counted in millions of treasury marks, it is becoming increasingly difficult to climb to the top of Olympus. Such clubs basically become extras and just sparring partners. But it is in such clubs that the spirit of football, for which people go to the stadiums, has not yet died. The English Championship has such clubs in abundance, but they never became champions. Basically, they have to be content with their history, a long history, and victories in the country’s cup. The championship is played mainly by fat cats clubs from London and Manchester.

Such a phenomenon can be observed in every championship. In fact, every decade a new lucky star lights up in one of the Old World Championships. Such an asterisk shines only one season. So it was with the Kaiserslautern who won the Bundesliga in 1998, barely rising from the lower division. In 2000, the star “Deportivo”, who won the La Liga.

In England at the moment, I would single out two such stars, which will forever go down in history and remain in the hearts of fans. At first it was Blackburn from the distant 1995. Now, in 2016, this is “Leicester City” and it doesn’t even matter if the “foxes” will become champions according to the results of the remaining tours.

Of course, there is no point in drawing direct parallels between these two clubs and their success stories. “Blackburn” – a team with a rich track record, stretching into the distant past. The success of the “tramps” of the 95th did not arise from scratch and was prepared for several seasons. The financial injections of Jack Walker, who made a decent fortune in the steel industry, have not become superfluous. An ardent fan of the club, did not spare the funds to achieve the highest results. 4th place in the newly created Premier League team is Kenny Dalgish. Then there was the vice championship and the desire to move the “Red Devils” in their hegemony of the early 90s. Of course, in such a prolonged upswing sensible transfer operations and cash infusions play their part. Alan Shearer, not yet Erik Cantona, but already a formidable Southampton scorer. For Shearer gave 3.6 million pounds, at that time a lot of money. Walker was ready to invest more. The company was made up of such newcomers as “wanderers” like Tim Flowers, David Batty, Stuart Ripley, Tim Sherwood, Graham Le So, and the Scot Colin Hendry.

All these factors gave Dalgysh the opportunity to reasonably expect that his guys would be moved from the throne of the “Mancounians”. Ambitions surpasses everyone.

The drama of the situation and the standings at the end of the championship. The vagrants who were defeated by their main rival at Old Trafford came out in the final round for the match against Liverpool, with a two-point advantage over Manchester United. “Liverpool” in this match solved for itself the fundamental task of entering the UEFA Cup, in turn, United went on a visit to the “Hammers”, who did not solve any problems. 20th minute Alan Shearer scored his 34th goal and became top scorer, but Johnny Barnes goals bring victory to the red. Everything is in the hands of the guys from Manchester. With their own hands, having tied 1-1, they will give up the Rovers championship.

The unbridled rejoicing of the players, the coaching staff and the management of Blackburn had no chapel. During the 4th season, the dream of the English middle peasants became a reality. True to build on the success of the team did not work and the fairy tale for bolschiki ended. Having sold off almost all the players, the “tramps” left the top division, the elite, for a while. In 2002, the team won the League Cup instilled hope in the hearts of fans of the team that the tale once again can come to life.

I would not say that the Ranieri project is a remake of Blackburn. The success of “Lester” is a successful confluence of hard work, good selection of players and good luck. Yes, luck this season comes with the Italian team. His first place in the championship was not prepared in advance. What can we talk about, if in the last season the “foxes” barely kept their residence in the Premier League.

The Thai billionaire who bought the team in 2010 and the former head coach of the team laid the foundations of the current team.
